Final class reflection

Before this semester began i thought i understood how to write papers, i thought i knew how the formatting was supposed to be done. After many classes, numerous in class activities, and multiple readings i found out that i didn't actually understand much of anything about writing a paper. But i think most importantly i found out which styles i prefer to write in. By looking back on other papers i've written in the past i figured out that the ones that came to me the easiest were fictional. Writing a story about some character always seemed to flow onto the paper for me.

Through this class I learned how to better criticize myself to ensure that the final product is the best i can do. I think my writing has changed a little after this semester, or at least the process in which i gather information and filter it to my needs. The hardest content for me to grasp this semester was most likely formatting, looking back i'm still sure i did it wrong. I expect to use the knowledge of rhetorical reflection a lot more in my life now that i understand how it works.

Of all the papers i turned in for this class i would say that it was my this i believe essay. which is strange because that was the first paper done in the class. I felt like i didn't have any restrictions and i could write as freely as possible allowing me to write down everything that came to mind as opposed to following a prompt. Now when i think about my own strengths and weaknesses i know that i shouid focus more on what i don't feel comfortable with first so that i will be well rounded out. if i had the time i would be constantly improving my works. unfortunately i hardly had enough time to finish them. The most important thing i need to work on as a writer is buckling down and doing the work.

My favorite part about the class is how it involved the entire class more often than not. My least favorite part of the class had to be whenever heavy workloads came down, like having a paper, paper reflection, reading and creating questions for seminar. The whole class was conducted very well though. All of the material was covered by the end of the semester.

reflecting on my argument??

The most important thing that i think i gained from writing this paper is how to back my own viewpoint based off of another persons argument, making an argument paper more exciting to read. I found out that writing an argument paper was much simpler than i had expected it to be. Honestly this assignment wasn't very challenging. The in class activities were more challenging which was good because it made the work for the paper seem easier. I would probably ask for more help from others if i had to do this paper again. I felt like the truth seeking part of this paper was pretty prevalent. My paper was shaped by this in a way that lets the reader decide how the culture should be viewed for themselves. how i view problems has always been around the same way so i suppose it refined my view of the world.

Persuasion on the way (Blog #10)

Building a solid foundation for an argument on my topic was a little difficult, so I've decided that i am going to be writing a more persuasive paper. I will be persuading my audience towards the idea of EDM culture not just being a huge Drug festival and that it does bring together millions of people, supports multitudes of charities and altogether deserves more respect than the media has been casting on it. to ensure that my voice is heard clearly i will address the fact that drug users do still exist and are a very big problem in the EDM community. Different people argue in many ways about how the EDM culture is nowadays. Activists will say that it is a wonderful experience to go to a festival or that the business going on behind the music is booming, whereas those with views would bring up the death in 2011 as one of my sources, Derek Staples did in "Why MDMA is destroying EDM". Some possible people in my audience that don't include anybody in our class would be concert goers and EDM fans without a doubt, but i would hope that it could also reach out to bigger names like the people who run events such as Insomniac productions or those in charge of the venues that concerts get played at. My personal position on this is that The dangers brought to the EDM scene by rampant drug users are getting attention, but in the worst way possible. i believe that while it is a problem that needs to be fixed, it is the only problem being shown on the front page and that page may as well be titled "Don't Go to an EDM Show". it's all so harsh on the issue that the media would drown out the position of the other concert goers that must deal with it directly. I recently went to a concert, so some of my personal experience from that will affect my paper through my examples. that concert would cover this issue very well i assume, mostly because the concert was HDYFEST on April 20th. in other words it was a 4/20 show at red rocks in colorado. I've got plenty of examples to throw into this paper. I hope to present this paper to my readers as an invitation to anybody who claims to have a viewpoint on this issue but has never experienced it first hand. I want my readers to develop a view that is real, not one that they learned through the grapevine.

Light-bulb' (synthesis reflection)

The most important thing i learned while writing this synthesis paper was how to mull over two differing viewpoints and put out my own polished idea using the information I've learned. I learned how to analyze an author for their ethos a lot more efficiently from the research portion of the paper. I now know that i can very easily find another writers three points of persuasion very easily in their writing. If I could have done something differently for this assignment i would put more time into a rough draft of my essay. My "light-bulb moment" was when i had found my second source of choice and found a legitimate argument to the strong basis i had already found and had my whole idea.

Blog #7 Summary of 2 articles

http://www.thembj.org/2012/10/the-rise-of-edm/
Text 1:

this text is a very professional seeming business journal written by Danny Feinstein and Colin Ramsay, two college students at the Berklee college of music. this text talks about how EDM has risen from the sidelines of music genres and taken such a huge jump in the rankings. Showing how EDM has evolved and Explaining how this new age of technology is helping to slingshot it's popularity are some of the other key points. The largest chunk of information this text seems to focus on is the Business of EDM. Their final topic carries out three full paragraphs of information while other topics had one or two. After reading through this text i have concluded that the authors of this article did not appear to be biased in any way, besides not showing any of the negative data that has been collected over the years regarding drug use and other such taboos. this text did not address those issues which could have been a conscious choice if they are trying to add more hype to EDM.

Text 2:
http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/09/why-mdma-is-destroying-edm/

This texts name seems very promising in terms of conflict. As i read through this text i was getting the fix on the topic of drug use in EDM culture. Derek Staples, The author of this text, explains how he goes to multiple festivals and shows learning all about the culture that goes on there. It becomes increasingly obvious that Staples believes the new age of EDM is led by young adults hooked on drugs.  these two texts will work very well for me in that they have quite opposing views on the new uprise of EDM

reflecting on 10,000 hours (blog #4)

When i first read the title of Gladwell's  paper "The 10,000 Rule", i didn't know what to expect but as every sentence passed, i became more and more drawn into the reading. In his writing, Gladwell explains what the difference could be between professionals or experts and amateurs or students. With some sound logic and research Gladwell might as well have swept me off my feet. through my own experiences i am forced to agree with him. There are many things in my life i consider myself to be pretty good at, all of which i was originally horrible at. Take videogames for example, the first time anyone picks up a controller they get so confused they might as well be programming the game. The same went for me but now i've played so many that when i'm introduced to a new console, controller and game at the same time i'll finish the game in a few hours. although i can't claim to be an expert on videogames (mostly because i don't have my hours logged) i can say that the 10,000 rule may as well be a fact.

10,000 hours of worth it (blog 3)

Some people call themselves experts  at a hobby or  think themselves blessed with talent . Gladwell's  article " The 10,000 hour rule" focuses on the difference between professionals and amateurs by describing the differences of how each person  practices their trait. Gladwell points out that when we ask amateurs or students how much they practice per day/week etc. it will almost always end up showing that they do not reach the 10,000 hour mark. whereas professionals or experts would practice almost exponentially and pass the 10,000 hour milestone and then go on to prove that they are experts or professionals at their subject. Some examples gladwell uses of this idea include Mozart, Bill gates, and the Beatles. He goes into detail about how each of those examples were brought up through their past and more specifically how they practiced so much. Gladwell definitely got his point of the 10,000 hour rule across, at least to me. After reading this i hope to be able to put in more practice to the things i aspire to be great at.
